Start with the connection
Identify the mannequin’s actual support point and the corresponding fitting on the proposed base. A matching description is not enough: ask for connection dimensions, orientation, included fixings and assembly instructions. Different figures can use different attachment arrangements even when their general appearance is similar.
For example, a figure wearing long trousers and shoes may need a different support arrangement from a barefoot figure in a short dress. Test the actual garments and confirm how a staff member accesses the support after dressing. Record whether the fitting is visible from the chosen viewpoint.
Measure the real footprint
Allow room for the base, support rod, figure and garments, including a coat, bag or extended arm. Compare the complete dressed outline with adjacent fixtures and normal routes through the space. A small base on paper can still be impractical if the pose projects beyond it or if staff cannot reach it to dress the figure.
Assess the intended setting
Describe the floor or platform, likely contact from shoppers, and whether the display will be moved regularly. Request the supplier’s guidance on the complete configuration and inspect the assembled figure in its intended position. Do not infer a universal load rating or stability from an image, the material name or the apparent weight of a base.
Before acceptance, assemble the specific base and figure together with the intended garments. Check that every specified component is present and that the supplier’s instructions cover the configuration you are using.
Specify before ordering
Send the model or connection details, dressed use, available footprint and preferred finish. Ask whether the support and fasteners are included, which parts are replaceable and what tools are needed. If you already own a figure, provide clear photographs and measurements and obtain explicit compatibility confirmation.
Include the practical sequence in your assessment: move the base into position, attach the support, dress the figure and inspect it from the customer side. Ask whether the connection can be reached once the garment is on. If a fixture must be relocated for cleaning or a campaign change, decide how it will be handled and where detached components will be kept. Keep the supplier’s configuration details with the base for future matching.
Project checklist
- Photograph the figure’s support point and measure the connection before requesting a replacement base or support.
- Confirm which fasteners are included and whether the rod and base are intended to work together.
- Measure the full footprint of the dressed figure, including accessories and the sweep of any extended limb.
- Review floor conditions and ask the supplier for guidance on the complete assembled configuration.
- Check whether staff can reach the connection when the figure is dressed in its intended outfit.
- Keep the base and figure references together in the store record for future compatibility checks.
